Change of occupancy/Bill in the wrong name

Energy bill in the wrong name? Get it into your business's name and onto a contract.

When you move into business premises, the electricity, gas and water accounts usually stay in the previous occupier's name. We handle the paperwork with the supplier, move the account into your business's name and compare contracts from 30+ suppliers on our panel.

Takes less than 10 minutes. Online quotes available 24/7. No bill or meter numbers needed.

Why the bill needs to be in your business's name

Paying the bill
Suppliers may not accept payment or set up a Direct Debit for an account that is not in your name, and bills addressed to someone else are easy to miss.
Reclaiming VAT
To reclaim VAT, the invoice needs to be addressed to your business. A bill in the previous occupier's name, or to "The Occupier", may not be accepted by HMRC as a valid VAT invoice.
Your accounts
Your accountant needs invoices in your business's name to record energy costs correctly.
Avoiding someone else's debt
The previous occupier's unpaid charges belong to them. Registering the date you took over makes it clear which usage is yours.
Getting a contract
Until the supplier knows who is responsible, you will stay on deemed rates, which are typically far more expensive than contracted rates.

How we get the account into your name

  1. 1

    Tell us about the premises

Your business details, the address and the date you took over. You do not need a bill or meter numbers to start.

  2. 2

    We find your supplies

We identify the electricity and gas meters at the address and confirm who supplies them.

  3. 3

We register you as the occupier

We notify the supplier of the change of tenancy and supply any proof of occupancy they ask for, such as your lease or completion statement.

  4. 4

    Opening readings agreed

We confirm the meter readings from the day you became responsible, so you only pay for your own usage.

  5. 5

    Contract in your name

We compare prices from our panel and set up a contract in your business's name, backdated to your move-in date in many cases.

Documents that help

Suppliers may ask for proof that you are now responsible for the premises. Any of these usually helps:

  • Lease or tenancy agreement
  • Completion statement for a purchase
  • Business rates bill
  • Letter from the landlord or agent
  • A photo of each meter with the reading and date

Still receiving bills for the previous occupier?

Do not pay a bill for a period before you moved in. Keep it, take a meter reading if you have not already, and pass it to us. We will confirm your start date with the supplier so the bills are split correctly.
